Be sure to take a look at my professional Facebook page
Creating a Facebook page is a great way to advertise yourself and your skills in a professional sense! Its great to have a database that acts as your own personal resume; it outlines your previous work and volunteer experience as well as gives employers a sense of your skills and accomplishments. Having everything summarized into one page makes it easier to advertise yourself to multiple potential employers. It also gives them all the appropriate contact information as well as potential references to back up your posted information. It basically acts as a relay station between you and the employer, making you easily accessible.

It is also more advantageous to have it not as hard copy, but easily edited and manipulated in an online version (and more environmentally friendly!) This way, if an employer does not hire you for the current position, they can easily access it for another position and see what other experience you have gained in the mean time.  If they had only a hard copy of your resume on file, then they would be missing out on potential experiences that could make you the best suited candidate for the newly opened position.

For tips on how to write a professional Facebook page be sure to take a look at this online article: How To: Set Up a Professional Facebook Page.

Annie Li has some great thoughts on the benefits of creating a professional Facebook page! She stated that there are some employers who ask their interviewees to provide the number followers they have on Twitter, which I found really interesting. It is incredible how the dynamic of the interview process can be impacted so dramatically by the use of social media platforms. I also agree with her in that the use of online resumes to determine a candidates suitability for a position will become commonplace.

  2. Being able to change your resume and allowing your potential employer to view this change right away is a very good point. If you were part of an event that is relevant to the job you are trying to apply for but only participated after the paper resume was handed in, that employer would never know. It is, therefore, a very useful advantage. Another point Kendra has made about an online resume is your increased accessibility to multiple employers. Because it is online, there is a higher potential for employers, especially ones you did not even know about, to access your profile and resume at any given time. Your potential employers, therefore, are not limited to the ones you had provided a paper copy of you resume to. Thanks for the insightful post Kendra!
